In February 2023, Cosworth became one of five vendors to be issued with an award as part of the Jumpstart for Advanced Battery Standardization (JABS) project to develop a high-performance modular battery system, based on our CSM (Cylindrical Scalable Module) for evaluation. Our ability to design and manufacture battery pack systems and carry out powertrain integration programmes with a level of control architecture mean that these can easily be adopted to different system configurations and offer an extensive range of differing battery pack configurations with the same fundamental building block.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), the U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC), the Department of the Navy Operational Energy (DON-OE), and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) have all partnered on the JABS project to accelerate the adoption of commercially-proven electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies by prototyping battery systems based on standardised modules that leverage cutting-edge technologies and manufacturing capabilities for military use.

Daphne Fuentevilla, DON-OE’s Deputy Director, said: “We are engaging industry to utilise commercial building block batteries that can be deployed as the foundational pathway for the hybridisation of any ground vehicle platform. Our strategy is to learn how large of a building block we can leverage, how to package the commercial technology into non-proprietary defence interfaces, and how to integrate batteries evolving at the speed of industry into defence platforms with static structures.”

Simon Dowson, Managing Director of Delta Cosworth, said: “To be one of five vendors to issued with an award as part of the Jumpstart for Advanced Battery Standardization project is a testament to Cosworth’s battery capabilities. Our CSM packs have been proven in commercial applications, and can be adapted for a wide-range of industry applications. We look forward to developing the high-performance modular battery system for this project.”
