BRITISH FORMULA 3
In 2016, we were tasked with developing a supply of engines for the British Formula 3 Championship. A renowned proving ground for the next generation of single-seater racers, the series required a 2.0-litre power unit based on a production OE engine. Putting into practice our decades of experience in motorsport and automotive powertrains, we created a solution that met an exacting brief.
There were three key elements of the powertrain for us to fulfil: performance parity, durability and cost-effectiveness.
As a single-make series, British F3 required an engine that would offer equal performance for all competitors – just as every other component in the car.
The series is the first rung on the motorsport ladder for young racers making the transition from karting to single-seaters. If they make a name for themselves in British F3, it stands them in good stead for being promoted up the racing ranks. The engine, therefore, needed to be cost-effective to meet the more modest budgets of junior drivers, while being resilient when driven by teenagers trying to establish a reputation and prove their race acumen.
We developed a powertrain ideally suited for the rigours of British F3, a unit that could be driven by racers who may have had little prior experience of managing engines while racing.
In our UK OE Manufacturing facility, we designed and developed the pistons, connecting rods, camshaft, valve train and dry sump system to create a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine capable of producing 230bhp.

Teams in junior single seater categories have varying budgets, which results in ranging amounts of engine testing. As a result, the engines reach the end of their rebuild interval at different stages.
For British F3, all engines are returned to us for a complete rebuild after 60 hours of use. They are stripped, washed and crack tested to ensure there are no underlying issues, before being fully rebuilt and tested on the dyno.
