At times like these, we’ve all sought great comfort from those doing good in the community. Whether it’s the alliance of industry in the call to produce ventilator parts, or inspirational individuals like Captain (now Colonel) Tom Moore, we’ve seen a groundswell of positivity.
When the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) honoured ‘Captain Tom’ on his 100th birthday at the end of April, celebrating his fundraising efforts with a flypast, we at Cosworth were already well acquainted with the excellent work of the BBMF. They are one of our valued customers.
Cosworth electronics feature on three of the BBMF fleet – two Spitfires and one Hurricane. These magnificent aircraft are truly iconic: symbols of hope and extraordinary spirit. From its base at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, RAF BBMF aircraft are regularly flown to commemorate our wartime heroes.
We supply the organisation with so-called Parametric Data Gathering Systems, or PDGS for short. Our electronics solutions collect data from the engine, pilot controls and air frame loads, while also assisting in the crucial interpretation of the data. This process allows engineers to understand the performance of the different planes in the fleet with the overall aim of extending the life of the aircraft.
As we approach the 75th anniversary of VE Day this Friday, we recall and commemorate once again the services of those who fell while on duty for their country. Through our electronics, RAF BBMF is able to fulfil its mission: to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition, in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country, to promote the modern-day Air Force and to inspire the future generations.
