Cosworth has long recognised the importance and value of an apprenticeship scheme. The company is delighted to get behind the UK’s National Apprenticeship Week initiative from 5-8 March, and to promote our own approach to apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships have played a key role in our recruitment efforts since the early 1980s. During that time, we have welcomed many young people with engineering and automotive aspirations, who we have supported with a credible apprenticeship scheme that successfully combines business needs and on-the-job learning. We put the individuals at the heart of the scheme, helping them to grow by involving them in real-world projects that deliver on the Cosworth promise to make the impossible possible.

For 2018, we have increased the number of apprentice placements to six, covering a cross-section of roles in our powertrain and performance electronics departments. Since 2011, we have had apprentices in engine build, engine test, manufacturing, maintenance, production engineering, quality control and electronics. This year, we have expanded the program to offer a new opportunity in process engineering.

National Apprentice Week offers us the chance to highlight how we help nurture and develop young aspiring engineers at Cosworth, and the success that we have had from our scheme. As part of our support for #NAW18, we will also be attending the National Apprenticeship Show in Milton Keynes.

We will be showcasing how a Cosworth apprenticeship can help young engineers to take his or her first steps on an exciting career path. For those who want to continue to study and are more suited to a hands-on environment, an apprenticeship scheme is the ideal way to gain practical experience while learning on the job.

At Cosworth, we also focus on enabling our apprentices to think critically and problem solve, and develop their interpersonal skills by interacting with people in a variety of roles across the business. Our apprentices are given a dedicated mentor to help them every step of the way. As a result of their experiences, most move into full-time positions within the company, underscoring the authenticity of the scheme.

We will be sharing insights from our current apprentices and their success stories throughout National Apprenticeship Week. Our current apprentices and representatives from our Human Resources department will also be at the National Apprenticeship Show in Arena MK on 12 and 13 March. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary year, the future of Cosworth is certainly looking bright. We’re excited to grow and share it with our next generation of talented and ambitious powertrain and electronics visionaries.
