Although there are a multitude of different hybrid configurations depending on the objective of the system, in all cases an electric motor is used to augment the performance of an ICE, either in whole for limited duration or in part throughout a journey.
We have been commissioned by a major US defence contractor to deliver a hybrid propulsion system based around our class leading 12bhp AG two-stroke diesel UAV engine.
HOW IT WORKS
The hybrid propulsion systems are installed in development Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) airframe. The nature of VTOL aircraft is such that they require significantly greater take-off power than cruise power. In this application the 12bhp AG is augmented by a further 6bhp from the electric motor for the short take-off phase, before the motor swtches to power generation in level flight.
We partnered with a company expert in the design and development of high density electrical machines to deliver the entire propulsion system, including the bespoke battery system.
