Capabilities

Cosworth is a diversified high-technology engineering business with deep experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Precision Manufacturing.

Mechanical Engineering

Cosworth has over 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture or high-performance engines and related products and components.

Cosworth is world-renowned for its expertise in delivering extremely high power density and overall performance without sacrificing reliability - not only in engines for motorsports and performance road vehicles, but also for applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles where small size, low weight and low fuel consumption are critical requirements.

Our engineers achieve unparalleled power density through a combination of unique engineering and engine design intellectual property, experience in supercharging and turbocharging, lightweight materials and specialist solutions such as coatings.

Cosworth's core expertise also has many other applications in fields such as Energy and Defence. Whether it is understanding the stress and friction in a large wind turbine and using that knowledge to reduce maintenance or improve output and reliability, or analysing a battle tank's large diesel engine to suggest ways to improve performance and fuel efficiency, the same combination of passion for engineering, scientific expertise, real-world experience and pragmatism delivers impactful solutions to customer needs.

Performance Electronics

Cosworth, through its Pi Research and Pectel brands, has been a leader in the use of electronics in motorsport since the early 1990s. After initially developing windtunnel instrumentation, Cosworth pioneered the "on-vehicle" application of modern electronics technology in the field of data loggers and control solutions such as engine control units (ECUs).

Today, Cosworth remains the market leader in electronics to the global motorsports market. In addition, its electronics platforms and products have been used succesfully in other forms of high-performance sports including marine (sailing and powerboat racing) and aerobatics.  Cosworth continues to lead the market with investments in sports electronics such as the Cosworth Live On Air solution, which enables large volumes of telemetry data (including HD video) to be streamed in real time over a fast 4G network from fast moving vehicles to a local hub for use by support staff, or to a Cloud service for use by consumers on smartphones or other connected devices.

The application of Cosworth electronics platforms outside motorsports has been a major focus area for the company.  This has yielded products based on the same intellectual property such as blast loggers used to log and analyse the impact of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on military vehicles and their occupants, and performance tracking and analysis products for the automotive sector.

Precision Manufacturing

Maunfacturing at Cosworth is an integral part of our process. Our customers expect solutions that work before the deadline, and one of the ways we can meet these expectations is to offer an end-to-end, single source offering for design and manufacture.

Because Cosworth projects are all about leading edge and high-performance solutions, our manufacturing capability is focused on meeting very challenging requirements.  From "one-off" to volume work, our highly skilled & experienced workforce is used to the demands of high accuracy and short lead time requirements. Using our specialist skills in high-precision prismatics, we now manufacture some of the most complex parts for leading aviation companies.

Our largest production site - the St. James Mill Road factory in Northampton, UK with in excess of 3600m2 total floor area - has over 100 machines including 3, 4 and 5 axis machining centres from Matsuura, DMG, Chiron and Hitachi Seiki as well as on on-site forge used for piston production. Other facilities with manufacturing capability include our Torrance, California (machining and electronics) and Cambridge, UK (electronics only) locations.

Quality engineers are embedded in all of our production centres, and Cosworth operates under a well-defined Quality Management System.
